Incoming Design Mission China

22-26 october 2017
Eindhoven

Welcome to the Netherlands! It is a great pleasure to host this creative mission in the Netherlands. For those already doing business in the Netherlands, this mission is an opportunity to expand their network. For others, the mission can be an excellent first step in learning about and gaining access to the Dutch market.

Over the past few decades, design has completely escaped from the traditional role in which it focused on the design of the homely domain. Instead, design has become a tactical response to all kinds of social challenges and at various levels of scale. Everything can be designed, from an international movement into a social media profile. The fact that design thinking is also used by business and government makes it possible for design to exert more influence in economic and political terms. At the same time, design has taken its own responsibility when it comes to issues such as ecology, labor, ethics and accessibility. This mission will enable the participating Chinese enterprises to meet their Dutch counterparts and exchange knowledge and expertise, and will facilitate new partnership agreements.

The mission is commissioned by the Netherlands Ministry of  Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RvO.nl), and it is an honour for our company handelsroute.nl, to coordinate the mission program for you on their behalf. We kindly thank the team of Dutch Design Foundation for their close collaboration in delivering an exciting program at Dutch Design Week.

We hope this mission will contribute to advance our outstanding Sino-Dutch economic and trade relations.

On behalf of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RvO.nl) we welcome the Chinese delegation.

MARKET ANALYSIS

There is an idiosyncratic mentality particular to the creative industry in the Netherlands. Rather than seeking safety the Dutch embrace risks in creative processes. This leads to unpredictable outcomes. The Dutch creative industry is accustomed to cooperation and collaboration across different domains. This results in valuable contributions to solutions for societal issues such as healthcare, safety, and energy.

The Dutch creative industry:
• is in the top 10 of the world;
• combines creativity and business (representing 1.9% of the Dutch economy);
• pioneers in different areas all around the country and beyond;
• is famous for prestigious Dutch architecture all around the globe;
• creates original and well-known TV programme concepts;
• has an active online gaming industry.

The Dutch creative industry ranks among the world’s top 10 for trade, jobs and brands. Holland’s creative industry influences innovation in other sectors, like health, security and energy. The sector also creates solutions for environmental challenges such as plastic pollution in oceans and new ways to build cars.

Dutch architects are commissioned to design prestigious buildings around the world, such as the Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart, the CCTV Headquarters in Beijing and Battery Park in New York. Renowned Dutch architects/ agencies include Rem Koolhaas (OMA), Francine Houben (Mecanoo), Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos (UNStudio).

Holland has a long tradition of interior design, epitomized by Rietveld’s furniture designs. Marcel Wanders is currently one the world’s best known furniture designers. Droog Design is also famous for the furniture and total design for many houses and hotels.
