Mr. Anton Hiemstra

Holland; digital gateway

Dutch Digital Infrastructure; world leading

The Digital Infrastructure consists of data network providers, network exchanges and data centers with millions of servers. With the AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange), the Netherlands has the largest Internet Exchange in the world. In 2014 data center take-up in Europe has been highest in Amsterdam, showing a growth of 179% compared to 2013(1).  More information on the Digital Infrastructure Industry in the Netherlands can be found in a recent detailed report by Deloitte.

The accessibility of large-scale Internet capacity, the good business climate, enshrined in law, net neutrality and European privacy laws make the Netherlands the preferred location for digital services. Giants like Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, Netflix and Booking.com currently provide their services in Europe from dozens of major Dutch datacenters. By creating a strong digital infrastructure, the Netherlands has again created a future proof trade and distribution Mainport which is considered to be the a digital gateway of Europe.

A major success-factor of the Dutch Digital Infrastructure is formed by its unique culture and traditional Internet knowledge.  This triggered Holland to evolve into its current unique and cooperative landscape of Internet exchanges, datacenters, hosters, cyber-security project and internet startups. It brought The Netherlands to become ‘the Digital Gateway to Europe’. This ‘Value Chain-Internet’ approach is a focal point to share with target audiences during this project.
