WORLD DESIGN EMBASSIES

This year the World Design Embassies represent design transition clusters temporarily formed by different organizations and designers collaborating on specific societal challenges.

This experts program will integrate parts of the following World Design Embassy tracks:
Embassy of Health
Embassy of Food
Embassy of Biobased and Circular Building
Embassy of Sustainability

Embassy of Health
Partners: UCreate, Philips, Waag Society, MMC en Stimuleringsfonds.

The theme at the Embassy of Health this year will be a further elaboration of Chronic Health - happily ever after? It is a reflection on the months we passed and pass in COVID 19 times. Human beings are excellent constructors of systems. This makes it possible to live together with massive numbers of individuals that do not know each other. Systems steer the way we act and contribute to the values that matter to us like safety, inclusivity and health. COVID 19 shook our systems and brings us to also rethink the way we design our care system. The lockdown brought reflection on what is truly valuable and the insight that health is not a product of our care system. Redesigning future care systems will start out from new values. Which are these values?

Embassy of Food
Partners: ZLTO, The Dutch Institute for Food & Design, Agri meets Design, Stichting DOEN

The Embassy of Food will be present in one of the spaces in Studio Strijp. Centerfold are sustainable developments in the food sector while touching on a wide range of everything that concerns food. And food concerns all and everyone. Through specific focuses there will be conversations and presentations in the ‘cafetaria’ about food production, food education, food and health, food and local community, food design and development of food design exhibitions, food places, protein transition.

Embassy of Biobased and Circular Building
Partners: Company New Heroes, Provincie Noord-Brabant, Kloeckner, CoE BBE, Avans Hogeschool, Circular & Biobased
Delta, Primum / Volker Wessels en Buro Kade, Wageningen UR, HAS Den Bosch, Material District, SuperUse Studios,
Rabobank, BAC

The Embassy presents itself in DDW 2020 with ‘The Exploded View’, a pavilion and an open source investigation. Next to a live presentation of state-of-the art materials and processes there is a virtual pavilion open to designers, companies, researchers to share and to collaborate. This iconic multimedia model in the form a decomposed traditional Dutch house serves to experience and investigate the effects and impact of using biobased and circular materials. Aim is to inspire and activate while demonstrating the beauty and impact of building materials on climate change &  healthy housing. It brings knowledge to further develop building legislation and create future solutions, as well as to rethink housing.

Embassy of Sustainability
Partners: YKSI Expo & Connect, Dutch Design Foundation, Searious Business, Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and
Design (MAFAD), King Willem I College (Den Bosch) , L'École de design Nantes Atlantique (Nantes, France).

Under the title Rethinking Plastic, a comprehensive program on the theme of plastics will run from September 2020 to the end of 2022 at Yksi Expo in Eindhoven. With exhibitions, presentations, lectures and other activities and meetings such as workshops, master classes and excursions. The entire chain will be discussed. But above all, Rethinking Plastic wants to show the role of designers in the search for improvements, alternatives and solutions. During Dutch Design Week products and results will be on show from the first collaborations, between educational and research institutes and companies.
